Dangerous Animals
The world’s most dangerous animals are, in fact, some of the smallest. Their danger comes from the venom that they inject into their victims when they bite them. Although the purpose of this venom is to kill prey that is to be eaten, it can also kill humans who get bitten when the animals feel threatened.
Crocodiles and sharks are very dangerous, but they cause very few human fatalities. The most dangerous type of crocodile is the salt water crocodile of Northern Australia. Salt water crocodiles have been known to attack humans. However, such attacks are usually the victims own fault, as these crocodiles will only attack humans when its habitat is invaded. Likewise, sharks rarely attack humans unless provoked by them.
Every year, thousands of people are affected by spider, snake, and jellyfish bites. There are between 2,500 and 3,000 different species of snakes in the world, and of these, over 600 are venomous. The toxicity of the venom varies considerably from snake to snake, as does the ability of the snake to inflict a wound. The Australian brown snake, for example, has highly toxic venom, but its mouth is so small that it cannot bite through thick clothing.
Possibly the most dangerous spider in the world, the funnel-web spider, is found in Australia, which has more dangerous creatures than any other country. Also found in Australia is one species of the box jellyfish. This species can kill a human within minutes. It is the most venomous creature on Earth.
